02 / Specification & Installation

Commercial Roller Shutters
Glasgow.

Commercial roller shutters need to suit the building and the working day. We help Glasgow businesses plan replacement and new shutters with the right curtain, drive, controls and safety arrangements for each opening.

Choose The Shutter Around The Opening

Start with the purpose of the door. A trade counter, warehouse goods entrance and internal store may all need different combinations of security, visibility, insulation and operating frequency. A shutter selected only on its overall dimensions can be a poor match for the way staff actually use the building.

A survey records clear opening dimensions, side room, headroom and the available fixing structure. Services above the opening, sloping floors and obstructions around the guides also matter. The proposed shutter box and drive arrangement must leave the access that vehicles, equipment and pedestrians require.

Curtains, Drives And Controls

Single-skin steel curtains are a familiar choice where security is the main requirement. Insulated profiles may be appropriate for a heated workshop or a temperature-sensitive store, but performance depends on the complete door and its seals. Ask for declared product information rather than assuming that a thicker curtain will solve every heat-loss problem.

Manual or powered operation should reflect the door size, frequency of use and the people operating it. An electrically operated shutter needs a suitable supply and a control method selected through risk assessment. Hold-to-run controls, automatic closing and remote activation have different implications for visibility and protection.

Security features also need to work with escape routes and other site procedures. A shutter across a route used by staff needs particular attention to access when power is unavailable. Do not treat an ordinary security shutter as a fire-resisting shutter or as a substitute for a correctly designed escape door.

Installation Standards And Responsibilities

BS EN 13241 is the product standard covering performance characteristics of industrial and commercial doors. BS EN 12453 addresses safety in use of powered doors. These standards support specification and assessment, but the final installation still needs a risk assessment that reflects its location and operating conditions.

The Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 are relevant when powered machinery is supplied or first put into service in Great Britain. Request the applicable conformity documentation, instructions and maintenance requirements at handover. For workplace use, PUWER and the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 inform ongoing duties.

How An Installation Is Planned

First, explain the opening, building use and any problems with the existing shutter. The survey then checks measurements, substrate condition and access. An agreed specification should identify the curtain, finish, operation, protective devices, controls and any electrical or building work that falls outside the door installation.

Before work begins, plan how the opening will be secured and how deliveries will move around the work area. Existing equipment needs safe removal, and the new assembly needs suitable fixings and alignment. Commissioning includes relevant operating and safety checks, followed by user instruction and a clear handover record.

If the door is being changed as part of a wider refurbishment, confirm landlord consent and any relevant building or planning requirements with the project team. Our sectional overhead door service is useful where insulated panels, glazing or a different opening arrangement better suit the building.

  1. Survey the opening, structure and daily operating needs.
  2. Agree the curtain, drive, controls and protection.
  3. Plan isolation, removal, fixing and installation.
  4. Commission the shutter and hand over instructions.

What Goes Into The Quotation

Door width and height, curtain construction, wind exposure, drive specification and safety controls all influence cost. So do finish, weather sealing, access equipment and the condition of the opening. Removal of an existing shutter and repairs to its support structure should be clearly identified rather than hidden in a headline figure.

Ask whether the quotation covers the electrical connection, commissioning, documentation and training. Compare like-for-like specifications, including declared performance, rather than just totals. Maintenance access and future parts availability deserve attention now, because they affect how the shutter can be looked after throughout its working life.

Useful To Know

Commercial Shutters Questions

Practical answers before you arrange a visit.

Should I Choose An Insulated Roller Shutter?

An insulated roller shutter may suit a heated commercial opening where reducing heat transfer matters. The decision also depends on how long the door stays open, its seals and the surrounding building fabric. Ask for the declared performance of the complete door and compare it with an insulated sectional alternative before choosing.

Can An Existing Manual Shutter Be Motorised?

Motorising an existing manual shutter requires assessment of the complete assembly, including the curtain, guides, drive and safety arrangements. It is a machinery change rather than simply adding a motor. A competent installer should confirm suitability, identify the applicable supply duties and provide the resulting instructions and conformity documentation.
